Doja Cat’s Upcoming Hip-Hop Album is a Response to Remy Ma & Other Critics

Doja Cat Elle June, July 2022 Cover Story gives a look into the singer-rapper’s upcoming next major album and deciding to go full hip-hop. For whatever reason, Doja hasn’t been fully embraced by the world of hip-hop, as her pop success has overshadowed everything.

However, with the bag already secured, Doja is looking to put out the project she’s always wanted.  A life-long fan of the genre and a stan for 9th Wonder, as well as Little Brother, Doja sparked rumors last year of putting out an entire rap project.

Well, in the conversation with Elle Magazine, Doja Cat confirmed that she was plotting out ideas for the effort. “I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with—I got a lot better. I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”

Regarding the upcoming project, Doja continued “I haven’t started just because of all the rehearsal and touring. I’ve got a lot going on, but it’s coming up. I have been getting songs and things sent to me…. Oh fuck, I wish I could tell people! There’s some really cool stuff that I got sent from friends. They’re all working on beats, and I’m giving them notes and they know what I want, so I’m excited.”

She closed out saying, “There’s an explosion of amazing female rap talent out there right now. It’s so cool to see that, because we didn’t have that when we were younger.”
