HOINGA: DEBRIS OF STELLAR EXPLOSION FOUND IN UNEXPECTED LOCATION

In the first all-sky survey by the eROSITA X-ray telescope onboard SRG, astronomers at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics have identified a previously unknown supernova remnant, dubbed “Hoinga.” The finding was confirmed in archival radio data and marks the first discovery of a joint Australian-eROSITA partnership established to explore our Galaxy using multiple wavelengths, from low-frequency radio waves to energetic X-rays. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) is a gravitational-wave detector that monitors areas in the vicinity of Earth using a network of pulsars (i.e., clock-like stars). At the end of 2020, the NANOGrav collaboration gathered evidence of fluctuations in the timing data of 45 pulsars, which could be compatible with a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) signal at nanohertz frequencies.

California’s 2020 wildfire season was unprecedented, the latest tragedy in a decades-long trend of increasing fire. Six of the 20 largest fires in state history burned during the calendar year. In August, a 14,000-strike “lightning siege” sparked 900 fires, and by the end of the year, roughly 17,200 square kilometers had burned across the state.

NASA’s James Webb SPACE TELESCOPE COMPLETES FINAL FUNCTIONAL TESTS TO PREPARE FOR LAUNCH

February marked significant progress for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, which completed its final functional performance tests at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach, California. Testing teams successfully completed two important milestones that confirmed the observatory’s internal electronics are all functioning as intended, and that the spacecraft and its four scientific instruments can send and receive data properly through the same network they will use in space. These milestones move Webb closer to being ready to launch in October.

WHEN FOAMS COLLAPSE (AND WHEN THEY DON’T)

Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University have revealed how liquid foams collapse by observing individual collapse events with high-speed video microscopy. They found that cracks in films led to a receding liquid front that sweeps up the original film border, inverts its shape, and releases a droplet, which hits and breaks other films. Their observations and physical model provide key insights into how to make foams more or less resistant to collapse.

INTERESTING PATTERN IN CROSS-SECTIONS OBSERVED IN F + HD → HF + D REACTION

A team of researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Southern University of Science and Technology, has discovered a thought-provoking pattern in cross-sections observed in an F + HD → HF + D reaction. In their paper published in the journal Science, the group describes their double-pronged approach to learning more about the role of relativistic spin-orbit interactions in chemical reactions. T. Peter Rakitzis, with the University of Crete, and IESL-FORTH, has published a Perspectives piece in the same journal issue outlining the difficulty of studying chemical reactions at the quantum level and the work done by the team in China.

CHEMICAL SIGNATURES OF IRON PREDICT RED SUPERGIANT TEMPERATURE

Red supergiants are a class of star that end their lives in supernova explosions. Their lifecycles are not fully understood, partly due to difficulties in measuring their temperatures. For the first time, astronomers have developed an accurate method to determine the surface temperatures of red supergiants.

THE DISTANCE TO THE NORTH POLAR SPUR

One of the largest structures in the Milky Way galaxy, the North Polar Spur, was discovered at radio and X-ray wavelengths. The Spur is a giant ridge of bright emission that rises roughly perpendicularly out of the plane of the galaxy starting roughly in the constellation of Sagittarius and then curves upward, stretching across the sky for over thirty degrees (the size of sixty full-moons) where it appears to join other bright filamentary features. The emitted radiation is highly polarized, indicative of its being produced by ionized gas in the presence of strong magnetic fields. Depending on how far away the Spur is from us, its length estimates range from hundreds to thousands of light-years.

SCIENTISTS USE LIPID NANOPARTICLES TO PRECISELY TARGET GENE EDITING TO THE LIVER

The genome editing technology CRISPR has emerged as a powerful new tool that can change the way we treat disease. The challenge when altering the genetics of our cells, however, is how to do it safely, effectively, and specifically targeted to the gene, tissue and organ that needs treatment. Scientists at Tufts University and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT have developed unique nanoparticles comprised of lipids—fat molecules—that can package and deliver gene editing machinery specifically to the liver. In a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they have shown that they can use the lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to efficiently deliver the CRISPR machinery into the liver of mice, resulting in specific genome editing and the reduction of blood cholesterol levels by as much as 57%—a reduction that can last for at least several months with just one shot.

NANOSHAPE IMPRINT LITHOGRAPHY USING MOLECULAR DYNAMICS OF POLYMER CROSSLINKING

Nanoscale applications in energy, optics and medicine have enhanced performance with nano-shaped structures. Such architectures can be fabricated at high-throughput beyond the capabilities of advanced optical lithography. In a new report on Microsystems & Nanoengineering, Anushman Cherala and a research team at the University of Texas at Austin Texas, U.S., expanded on nanoimprint lithography and extended the previous simulation framework to improve shape retention by varying the resist formula and introducing new bridge structures during nanoshape imprinting. The simulation study demonstrated viable approaches for nanoshaped imprinting with good shape retention matched by experimental data.

A DEEP LEARNING TECHNIQUE TO SOLVE RUBIK’S CUBE AND OTHER PROBLEMS STEP-BY-STEP

Colin G. Johnson, an associate professor at the University of Nottingham, recently developed a deep-learning technique that can learn a so-called “fitness function” from a set of sample solutions to a problem. This technique, presented in a paper published in Wiley’s Expert Systems journal, was initially trained to solve the Rubik’s cube, the popular 3-D combination puzzle invented by Hungarian sculptor Ernő Rubik.

A FLUID-MAGNETIC SOLUTION FOR SORTING PLASTIC WASTE

With the ever-increasing worldwide mass production of plastic, the inefficiency of current plastic recycling strategies has raised several environmental, societal, and economic concerns. Magnetic density separation (MDS) is an efficient state-of-the-art recycling technique that uses magnetized fluids to separate different types of plastic particles. Researcher Sina Tajfirooz has developed and validated a model to predict the collective motion of particles in MDS systems. Simulation results shed new light on the separation process in MDS systems and provide data that can help optimize the performance of future MDS systems. Tajfirooz defended his thesis on February 22nd at the department of Mechanical Engineering.

THE GRANTECAN DISCOVERS THE LARGEST CLUSTER OF GALAXIES KNOWN IN THE EARLY UNIVERSE

A study, led by researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and carried out with OSIRIS, an instrument on the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), has found the most densely populated galaxy cluster in formation in the primitive universe. The researchers predict that this structure, which is at a distance of 12.5 billion light years from us, will have evolved becoming a cluster similar to that of Virgo, a neighbor of the Local Group of galaxies to which the Milky Way belongs. The study is published in the specialized journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS).

Litter is not only a problem on Earth. According to NASA, there are currently millions of pieces of space junk in the range of altitudes from 200 to 2,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, which is known as low Earth orbit (LEO). Most of the junk is comprised of objects created by humans, like pieces of old spacecraft or defunct satellites. This space debris can reach speeds of up to 18,000 miles per hour, posing a major danger to the 2,612 satellites that currently operate at LEO. Without effective tools for tracking space debris, parts of LEO may even become too hazardous for satellites.

GHOST PARTICLE FROM SHREDDED STAR REVEALS COSMIC PARTICLE ACCELERATOR

Tracing back a ghostly particle to a shredded star, scientists have uncovered a gigantic cosmic particle accelerator. The subatomic particle, called a neutrino, was hurled towards Earth after the doomed star came too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of its home galaxy and was ripped apart by the black hole’s colossal gravity. It is the first particle that can be traced back to such a ‘tidal disruption event’ (TDE) and provides evidence that these little understood cosmic catastrophes can be powerful natural particle accelerators, as the team led by DESY scientist Robert Stein reports in the journal Nature Astronomy. The observations also demonstrate the power of exploring the cosmos via a combination of different ‘messengers’ such as photons (the particles of light) and neutrinos, also known as multi-messenger astronomy.

BACTERIAL MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLES FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS

Magnetic nanoparticles biosynthesized by bacteria might soon play an important role in biomedicine and biotechnology. Researchers of the University of Bayreuth have now developed and optimized a process for the isolation and purification of these particles from bacterial cells. In initial tests, magnetosomes showed good biocompatibility when incubated with human cell lines. The results, presented in the journal Acta Biomaterialia, are therefore a promising step toward the biomedical use of magnetosomes in diagnostic imaging techniques or as carrier in magnetic drug delivery applications.

Although technology to observe the flow of nanoparticles through lymphatic vessels in vivo has been developed, there has been no method to evaluate the flow of nanoparticles in a more detailed and quantitative manner ex vivo. Thus, research was conducted to develop an ex vivo lymphatic vessel lumen perfusion system to determine how nanoparticles move in lymphatic vessels and how they affect the physiological movement of lymphatic vessels.

RESEARCHERS FLIP THE SWITCH TO MAKE MICROSENSORS SUPER SENSITIVE TO BIOMOLECULES

A team led by researchers at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering have found a new way of enhancing the performance of electrochemical micro-sensors. This discovery could lead to the detection of biomolecules, such as dopamine, at lower concentrations than is possible today. Their findings are described in a paper published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics.

USING PERSISTENTLY LUMINESCENT NANOCRYSTALS TO CREATE 3-D X-RAYS

A team of researchers with members from China and Singapore has found that it is possible to use persistently luminescent nanocrystals to create 3-D X-rays. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the group describes a means for creating nanocrystals that can hold onto excited charge carriers, and how they used those crystals to fashion a bendable sheet that could be used to create 3-D images using X-rays. Albano Carneiro Neto and Oscar Malta, with the University of Aveiro and the Federal University of Pernambuco, respectively, have published a News & Views piece in the same journal issue outlining the history of 3-D X-ray research and the work done by the team with this new effort.
