SURPRISE TWIST SUGGESTS STARS GROW COMPETITIVELY
A survey of star formation activity in the Orion Nebula Cluster found similar mass distributions for newborn stars and dense gas cores, which may evolve into stars. Counterintuitively, this means that the amount of gas a core accretes as it develops, and not the initial mass of the core, is the key factor in deciding the final mass of the produced star.

DESIGNED PROTEINS ASSEMBLE ANTIBODIES INTO MODULAR NANOCAGES
In a new report now published on Science, Robby Divine and an interdisciplinary research team at the department of biochemistry, regenerative medicine, and vaccines and infectious disease at the University of Washington U.S. and the School of Medicine, at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran, conducted computational designs of nanocages to assemble antibodies into precise architectures. During the construction, one structural component formed an antibody or Fc-ligand fusion and the second design formed an antibody-binding homo-oligomer to drive nanocage assembly with different valencies and symmetry. The team hypothesize how this process can also increase the neutralization of a pseudovirus; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2) via α- SARS-COV-2 monoclonal antibodies and Fc-angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) fusion proteins.
OXYGEN MIGRATION ENABLES FERROELECTRICITY ON NANOSCALE
Hafnium-based thin films, with a thickness of only a few nanometres, exhibit an unconventional form of ferroelectricity. This allows the construction of nanometre-sized memories or logic devices. However, it was not clear how ferroelectricity could occur at this scale. A study that was led by scientists from the University of Groningen showed how atoms move in a hafnium-based capacitor: migrating oxygen atoms (or vacancies) are responsible for the observed switching and storage of charge. The results, which were published online by the journal Science on 15 April, point the way to new ferroelectric materials.
NEW NANOSCALE DEVICE FOR SPIN TECHNOLOGY
Researchers at Aalto University have developed a new device for spintronics. The results have been published in the journal Nature Communications, and mark a step towards the goal of using spintronics to make computer chips and devices for data processing and communication technology that are small and powerful.
