Over the past few years, multi-robot systems have proved to be particularly useful for solving problems that involve a distribution over space or time (i.e., allowing agents to cover large distances or monitor processes over time).

RESEARCHERS USE AI TO EMPOWER ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATORS

Like superheroes capable of seeing through obstacles, environmental regulators may soon wield the power of all-seeing eyes that can identify violators anywhere at any time, according to a new Stanford University-led study. The paper, published the week of April 19 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), demonstrates how artificial intelligence combined with satellite imagery can provide a low-cost, scalable method for locating and monitoring otherwise hard-to-regulate industries.

An international team of astronomers has conducted a detailed kinematic study of a radio galaxy known as 3C 84. The research sheds more light on the properties of this source and its connection to gamma-ray emission. The study was detailed in a paper published April 7 on the arXiv pre-print repository.

SCIENTISTS NOW ABLE TO MAP DEFECTS IN 2D CRYSTALS IN LIQUID

Monolayer crystals, often being referred as 2D crystals or 2D materials, possess the unique characteristic of having a single layer of regular atomic structure. And the more regular the structure is, the higher quality the crystal. In some cases, the atomic structure is repeated to perfection, but most of the time—as is usually the case in nature—there are some flaws.

UNDERSTANDING INTERFACES OF HYBRID MATERIALS WITH MACHINE LEARNING

Using machine learning methods, researchers at TU Graz can predict the structure formation of functionalized molecules at the interfaces of hybrid materials. Now they have also succeeded in looking behind the driving forces of this structure formation.

TRACKING TOPOLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN GRAPHENE

Scientists have been able to demonstrate that graphene nanostructures can be generated by annealing of a nanostructured silicon carbide crystal for a few years. “These two-dimensional, spatially strongly restricted carbon bands exhibit a vanishingly small electrical resistance even at room temperature. They are thus ballistic,” explains Prof. Dr. Christoph Tegenkamp, Head of the Professorship of Solid Surfaces Analysis at Chemnitz University of Technology. Something similar does not happen, for example, with an expanded and perfectly two-dimensional layer of graphene.
