New research has demonstrated how, in contrast to encroachment by the invasive alien tree species Prosopis julifora (known as Mathenge -in Kenya or Promi in Baringo), restoration of grasslands in tropical semi-arid regions can both mitigate the impacts of climate change and restore key benefits usually provided by healthy grasslands for pastoralists and agro-pastoralist communities.
STABILITY OF EARTH’S BIGGEST LUMP OF ICE AT RISK FROM WARMING OCEANS
The drastically increasing influence of humans on Earth’s climate causes a melting of polar ice sheets and therefore a rise in global sea levels. A team of international scientists led by the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University and including the University of Southampton has now analyzed the response of the largest ice sheet on Earth—the East Antarctica Ice Sheet—to a warming climate.
CASCADING EVENTS LED TO 2018 KĪLAUEA VOLCANIC ERUPTION, PROVIDING CLUES FOR FORECASTING
The 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano was one of the largest volcanic events in Hawai’i in 200 years. This eruption was triggered by a relatively small and rapid change at the volcano after a decade-long build-up of pressure in the upper parts of the volcano, according to a recent study published in Nature Communications by earth scientists from the University of Hawai’i (UH) at Mānoa and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

AMATEUR ASTRONOMER ALBERTO CABALLERO FINDS POSSIBLE SOURCE OF WOW! SIGNAL
Amateur astronomer and YouTuber Alberto Caballero, one of the founders of The Exoplanets Channel, has found a small amount of evidence for a source of the notorious Wow! signal. In his paper uploaded to the arXiv preprint server, Caballero describes searching the Gaia database for possible sun-like stars that might host an exoplanet capable of supporting intelligent life.
NATIONAL SOLAR OBSERVATORY PREDICTS A LARGE SUNSPOT FOR THANKSGIVING
On November 18 scientists from the US National Science Foundation’s National Solar Observatory predicted the arrival of a large sunspot just in time for Thanksgiving. Using a special technique called helioseismology, the team has been ‘listening’ to changing sound waves from the Sun’s interior which beckon the arrival of a large sunspot. Recent changes in these sound waves pointed to the imminent appearance of new sunspots which we can now see from Earth near the eastern solar limb.
GEMINI NORTH OBSERVATIONS ENABLE BREAKTHROUGH IN CENTURIES-OLD EFFORT TO UNRAVEL ASTRONOMICAL MYSTERY
An international team of astronomers using Gemini North’s GNIRS instrument have discovered that CK Vulpeculae, first seen as a bright new star in 1670, is approximately five times farther away than previously thought. This makes the 1670 explosion of CK Vulpeculae much more energetic than previously estimated and puts it into a mysterious class of objects that are too bright to be members of the well-understood type of explosions known as novae, but too faint to be supernovae.

ANIMAL-FREE METHOD PREDICTS NANOPARTICLE TOXICITY FOR SAFER INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS
Our lungs are exposed to a multitude of hazardous airborne particles on a daily basis. Nanoparticles, due to their small size, may reach the sensitive alveolar region of the human lung and trigger inflammation even after a single inhalation leading to severe diseases such as heart disease, brain damage and lung cancer for prolonged exposure. In manufacturing, toxic nanoparticles may be released into the environment during the production, processing, degradation or combustion of materials. Despite advances in models for nanotoxicology, currently neither in vitro nor in silico testing tools can reliably predict adverse outcomes or replace in vivo testing. In order to facilitate the introduction of safer materials into our lives, novel testing strategies are needed to predict the potential toxicity of industrial nanoparticles before and during the manufacturing process.
